Basic Data Report 2

Introduction

The Maryland Geological Survey (and its predecessor agency, the Maryland Department of Geology, Mines and Water Resources) have carried on ground-water investigations cooperatively with the U.S. Geological Survey since 1942. In connection with these investigations construction records have been collected for several thousand wells in Maryland; among these are the records of more than 300 wells in Charles County. This preliminary report presents the available well data in a single volume, which should be useful to well drillers, local residents, community planners, and water-supply engineers who may be involved in future development of the ground-water resources of the area.

Charles County, lying west of Chesapeake Bay, is in a part of the State known as Southern Maryland. The county has a land area of about 460 square miles and is included between the parallels of 38° 10' and 38° 43' north latitude and between the meridians of 76° 40' and 77° 20' west longitude. The area is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain physiographic province and is characterized by moderate to slightly dissected topography. Elevations of the land surface range from a few to more than 200 feet above sea level. The area is drained chiefly by tributaries of the Potomac River.
