Deep wells of Maryland

1970, Jonathan Edwards, Jr .

Basic Data Report 5

Introduction

This catalog of 349 deep wells in Maryland provides a readily accessible source of deep stratigraphic data in the State. The wells listed include 162 drilled in search of oil or gas, 39 drilled for gas storage injection, 21 drilled to test geologic structures for possible use as gas storage facilities, 88 deep water wells, 31 deep stratigraphic tests, and 8 deep core holes. Every oil or gas well drilled in Maryland is listed, regardless of its depth, but only those water wells having a depth greater than 1,000 feet are included, except where wells of lesser depth provide significant stratigraphic information. In those counties where no wells have been drilled as deep as 1,000 feet, the deepest well in the county is given.

All deep wells and core test-holes previously referred to in other publications, and all unpublished oil or gas test-holes and deep water wells in the open files of the Maryland Geological Survey are included. The locations of these wells are shown on Plate 1. Many old wells whose logs are no longer available have been included and at least approximately located. Undoubtedly, some old or obscure wells have been overlooked, or the information concerning their depths and locations was so vague that they were not included.
