Abstract

The biogenic structures of the Chesapeake Bay bottom are examined with emphasis on animal-sediment interactions. Radiographic analysis of 52 box cores reveals a decrease in the diversity of biogenic features towards the head of the estuary and within the deep-water channels. Burrows were less distinct in the sandier biotopes. The macrobenthos dominate the top 10 cm. with penetration of larger and adult species to and greater than 30 cm. Biological activity was found to be a major modifier of the benthic boundary layer.
