Geologic and Karst Features Map of the Hagerstown Quadrangle, Washington County, Maryland
Project Summary
This map shows the geologic and karst features of the Maryland portion of the Hagerstown 7.5-minute quadrangle. Geologic field mapping in the quadrangle was conducted in 2011-2013. Karst features mapped include sinkholes, closed depressions and springs. The map was compiled at a scale of 1:24,000 (1 inch = 2,000 feet). The digital geologic map was developed for geographic information systems (GIS) using ESRI's ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 software. Data are projected in the Maryland State Plane Coordinate System of 1983 (meters). This map includes short descriptions of geologic units and a cross section showing the distribution of geologic units under the earth’s surface.
Purpose
This map area is included in an investigation of karst development in the Hagerstown Valley. The karst investigation was conducted by the Maryland Geological Survey. These data are fundamental to planning and management of highways and general construction which potentially are adversely affected by hazardous geologic processes such as solutional karst features, landslides and flooding.
